Summer/Fall 2009
As summer moved along this year, the fishing continued to be great. Our summer fishing almost always produces good sized walleyes and we had a ton of 5-8 lb fish released. Due to the cooler weather this year the big pike remained shallow for most of the summer.
SLENDER LAKE
The smallmouth bass at Slender went on the beds to spawn the last week of June. The top water action really heated up then. We had many smallmouth released in the 16-20" category. Jim Battles released the largest walleye of 31" at Slender this year. Mark Schoolcraft released a super tank muskie at 51".
Steve Stremke, aka The Walleye Master, taught his son, Eric, how to catch big walleyes on Slender Lake. Steve released a 28.5" walleye and Eric released a 27.5" walleye. What a great way to start your son out on his first trip to Canada!

The Stohl troup had an ardent angler by the name of Eric, who trolled lures on bottom bouncers directly across from the cabin. He had great catches and numbers in sight of the cabin.
The Baldwin group had a very successful trip. Drew released a 45" pike and Matt had a 45.5" pike. They reported the fishing was excellent.

Smoothrock lake has been a power house with many trophies being released this summer.

John Stephens' 45.5" northern. A trophy of a lifetime in anyone's book.

COLES LAKE
Coles continues to shine as a great walleye lake. Because of the cooler water temperatures, we had brook trout throughtout Coles lake while anglers were fishing for walleyes. After the water warmed up, the walleye fishing moved into high gear and became steady and consistent. Jeremy Bangel released a 32" pike and a 24" walleye. Troy Schnieder also released a 24" walleye.

We also had many beautiful brook trout caught and released. Ralph Horsens released a 17", 19" and 24" brook trout...fantastic!

George Tait released this beautiful 19" brook Trout.
I fished Coles with one of our groups and went to several of my sunken reefs and couldn't find the fish. I sat in the boat and thought about it - they are not deep so I must go shallow. I remembered the writing on the wall in the old trappers cabin. "Go to the east end where the water comes in." I did and we caught 100's of walleyes in 3-5' of water trolling 3" sassy shads! What a wonderful day of fishing. Who would have ever thought at the end of July they would be this shallow???
All in all summer and fall fishing this year was fantastic.
Until next time...great fishing! Book your next fishing trip with Pipestone Fly-In Outposts807-482-1143 summer 218-395-0103 winter Click here to receive our online newsletters.
